Women’s basketball split games with Lightning, men blow out city rivals
Women
Coming off dominant wins against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens last weekend, the Trojans women’s basketball team faced the St. Mary’s University Lightning this weekend.
On Thursday, Jan. 15, the teams met at St. Mary’s University in Calgary.
The home side jumped out to an early 33-15 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Trojans’ defence held the Lightning to just eight points, trailing 41-33 at halftime.
Back-and-forth third and fourth quarters saw the Lightning earn a 77-65 win.
Trojans veteran Kitawna Sparks led the offence, recording a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
The following night, the teams met at the SAIT Bubble.
At halftime, the Lightning led 35-33.
For the second straight night, the home side held the Lightning to eight points in a quarter, taking a 55-43 lead after three quarters.
The Trojans held on for a 69-62 win.
Trojans veteran Ava Kearl recorded a game-high 22 points in the victory.
With the split, the Trojans sit tied for second place in the ACAC women’s basketball standings with a 7-7 record.
Next, the Trojans host the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Friday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. in Calgary, followed by a rematch Saturday at 6 p.m. in Medicine Hat.
Men
With a 12-0 record, the Trojans men’s basketball team remains the top team in the ACAC.
On Thursday, Jan. 15, the Trojans faced the St. Mary’s University Lightning in Calgary.
The Trojans led 47-34 at halftime.
Two 20-point quarters propelled the Trojans to an 87-64 win.
Guard Marcus Masters led all scorers with 26 points and six rebounds.
The teams met again Friday at the SAIT Bubble.
The Trojans’ defence held the Lightning to 47 points in a 90-47 win.
Veteran Killian Yopa recorded a 22-point, 10-rebound double-double.
With the two wins, the Trojans remain first in the ACAC men’s basketball standings at 14-0.
Next, the Trojans host Medicine Hat on Friday, Jan. 23, at 8 p.m. at the SAIT Bubble, followed by a rematch Saturday at 8 p.m. in Medicine Hat.
Women’s hockey drops two straight to Queens, men split games with Voyagers
Women
The Trojans women’s hockey team played back-to-back games against the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.
The Queens hosted the Trojans on Friday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. in Red Deer.
After one period, the teams were tied 1-1, with goals from Rylee Mepham for the Queens and a power-play goal from Esther Boelema for the Trojans.
The Queens scored two power-play goals in the second period from Kaedence Mollin and Gabriella Meier to take a 3-1 lead.
Sarah Raymond scored early in the third to make it 4-1, and Meier added her second to secure a 5-1 win.
Saturday’s rematch took place at WinSport Arena in Calgary.
The Queens scored two early first-period goals from Kailyn Bablitz and Camryn Ward to lead 2-0.
Mia McGregor and Tasha Barsby added second-period goals to extend the lead to 4-0.
With no scoring in the third, the Queens earned the 4-0 victory.
With the two losses, the Trojans remain last in the ACAC women’s hockey standings at 4-13.
Next, the Trojans face the Olds College Broncos on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. in Olds, followed by a rematch Friday at 6:45 p.m. at WinSport Arena.
Men
The Trojans men’s hockey team opened 2026 with two games against the Portage College Voyagers.
The series began Friday, Jan. 16, at WinSport Arena.
Voyagers rookie Jack Jarvis scored 31 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, Owen Underhill tied the game on assists from Zach Cain and Payton Kostyshyn.
The Trojans added three more first-period goals from Hunter Degelman, Travis Hensrud and Underhill on the power play to lead 4-1 after 20 minutes.
Portage tied the game in the second with goals from Aidan Taylor, Jonah Smith on the power play and Karsten Gorrill.
Brett Butz scored early in the third to give the Trojans a 5-4 lead.
After a tripping penalty, Taylor scored a power-play goal to tie the game before Stravos Konstantonis gave the Voyagers the lead.
Smith added two empty-net goals as the Voyagers won 8-5.
Saturday’s rematch at WinSport Arena was another high-scoring affair.
Carson Devine opened the scoring for the Voyagers before Colby Bear tied it 45 seconds later.
The Voyagers added two first-period goals to lead 3-1.
After a scoreless second, rookie Carter Briltz cut the deficit to one early in the third.
Veteran Ryan Neumann tied the game with seven minutes left.
Both teams scored late to send the game to overtime.
Three minutes and 11 seconds into sudden death, Tanner Gold scored on assists from Cain and Cyle Clayton to secure a 5-4 Trojans win.
With the split, the Trojans sit second in the ACAC men’s hockey standings at 11-3.
Next, the Trojans visit the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder on Friday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m., followed by a home rematch Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at WinSport Arena.
Trojans dominate second curling tournament of the season
The Trojans curling team continued its strong form at the second ACAC curling tournament.
Hosted by the NAIT Ooks in Edmonton, the event ran from Friday, Jan. 16, to Sunday, Jan. 18.
Women
The Trojans women defeated the Lakeland Rustlers 8-6 and the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens 7-6 on Friday.
Saturday, the Trojans beat the Ooks 7-4 and dominated the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings 11-3.
Sunday featured wins over the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder, 5-3, and the Portage College Voyagers, 8-0.
With six straight wins, the Trojans sit first in the ACAC women’s curling standings at 12-0.
Men
The Trojans men went 3-2 on the weekend.
They opened with an 8-4 loss to the Thunder before defeating the Kings 8-5 and falling 9-7 to Lakeland.
The Trojans closed with a 7-0 win over NAIT and a 9-0 victory over the Vikings.
They sit fourth in the standings at 4-6.
Mixed
The Trojans mixed team opened with a 3-0 round, defeating Concordia 1-0, NAIT 8-4 and Lakeland 9-4.
In the second round, the Trojans beat Concordia 12-0 before losses to NAIT and Lakeland.
The Trojans sit first in the ACAC mixed standings at 7-2.
Next, the ACAC curling championships run from Friday, Jan. 30, to Sunday, Feb. 1, hosted by Portage College in Lac La Biche, Alta.
